<\/strong>We\u2019ll meet at Jaffa Gate, one of the city\u2019s original gates from the Ottoman era. Once inside the city walls, we\u2019ll be immersed in history, diverse architectural styles, and multicultural neighborhoods.
We will explore the Armenian Quarter which is one of the four sections within the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem.\u00a0
The Armenian compound is enclosed by an inner wall within the Armenian Quarter and includes St. James, a convent, school, churches and residences. Along the walk from the Jaffa Gate past the Zion Gate and to the Jewish Quarter are many small shops displaying the beautiful hand-painted Armenian pottery which is made locally. Armenian ceramics can be seen adorning many parts of the Old City including the Dome of the Rock and neighborhood street signs.
In the Christian Quarter,\u00a0we\u2019ll visit the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Jesus was crucified, buried, and resurrected. Continuing on through part of the route of the Via Dolorosa, we\u2019ll retrace Jesus\u2019 carrying of the cross following his condemnation by Pontius Pilate.\u00a0
Security allowing, we may visit the Dome of the Rock, a 7th-century Islamic shrine at the Temple Mount. Of utmost significance for both Muslims and Jews, our local expert will delve further into the narrative behind one of the holiest spots in the world. We\u2019ll then take some time to walk through the Arab Shuk, a winding market with a distinctly Arabian feel and characterful buzz. At a suitable point in our day, we\u2019ll stop for a local lunch, using the time to talk about typical Israeli dishes or the intricacies behind hummus recipes.

<\/strong>Our day begins at Jaffa Gate and our route may take a number of different directions depending on group interests. We may start with a scenic lookout over the both Old and New Citycity from the David Citadel, a fitting point to set the scene for the day. Our route will take us to David\u2019s Tomb in Mount Zion, the burial place of King David,a sacred location for visitors. Our private tour will continue on to the Jewish Quarter, entering through the Zion Gate, which is riddled with bullet holes from the War of Independence in 1948. We\u2019ll discuss the important history of the gate, the site where Jewish residents were forced out by the Jordanians, and later where the IDF forces entered to reunite the Old City with West Jerusalem during the Six Day War. Once through the gate, we\u2019ll visit some\u00a0Sephardic Synagogues, stopping to discuss the centers of religious life in the Jewish Quarter over the centuries before walking through the ancient Cardo. As our day draws to an end, we will visit one of the most important locations for Jews: the Western Wall. We\u2019ll discuss the significance of the site, including the stories of the Temple Mount. Depending on the interests of our group, we may choose to visit the Davidson Center (at own expense), which holds an extensive range of archaeological artifacts from the Second Temple to Early Islamic periods.\u00a0
<\/span>After walking in the footsteps of former Jewish pilgrims and rabbis, we will emerge from the day with a comprehensive understanding of Jewish history and heritage in Jerusalem. We will have gained appreciation and insights into the waves of immigration in and out of the city, the stories of well-known Jewish figures, and current and past events in the holiest of cities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
The ancient inhabitants dug caves in the limestone rock not only to quarry the chalk but also to use the caves as water cisterns, storage space,, dovecotes, tombs and to keep live stock. Highlights of the national park include the Sidonian Burial Caves, where the leading families of the Beit Guvrin Sidonian, Edumite and Greek communities were buried.
<\/span>And then Latrun Tank Museum:\u00a0 the setting for Latrun is truly magnificent. Built by the British as a police fortress outpost that overlooks the surrounding terrain and controlling the main road from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\n
<\/strong>The walls of the Citadel serve as a stage for a nightime show which is a celebration of sight and sound. Amidst the archaeological remains in the Citadel\u2019s courtyard and to the sound of original music, the story of Jerusalem unfolds through giant breathtaking, virtual reality images.
