GERMANY

Germany is a tourist country of variety, having made a generous contribution to the world of classical music, but also having a large food culture characterized by wholesome and hearty dishes.

This destination is full of beautiful landscapes waiting to be discovered. You can explore Bavaria’s magnificent baroque palaces one day, and immerse yourself in Hamburg’s cool, redeveloped HafenCity the next.

In hip Berlin, historic sites such as the Brandenburg Gate and contemporary art galleries create exciting contrasts.

GET INSPIRED

Explore the New Berlin

Since reunification, civic planners have demolished large sections of what once stood as a scar across the face of a defeated nation. The architectural changes and urban developments that constantly update the cityscape around Berlin’s Friedrichstrasse and Potsdamer Platz can be confusing. But regardless of which renewal program is churning up rubble at the time of your visit, a pilgrimage through what used to be the most bitterly contested urban turf in Europe can’t help but provoke powerful emotions.

Cruise the Elbe, the Danube, and the Rhine

Cruises begin and end at large cities of historic interest and last anywhere from 6 hours to 7 days.

Boat on the Neckar

The Neckar River meanders through about 80km (50 miles) of some of Germany’s most famous vineyards. But the real appeal of the winding road along the water is the medieval castles scattered along the way. Highlights en route include Heidelberg, Neckarsteinach, Hirschhorn, Eberbach, Zwingenberg, and Burg Hornberg. Don’t forget to stop en route for samplings of the local wines.

Eat like a German

Try traditional beers, sausages and pretzels but also inventive, Michelin-starred restaurants. Savor pillowy spaetzle and Berliner pfannkuchen (jelly donut).

Tour Castles

Neuschwanstein Castle, whose fairy-tale turrets and dramatic setting inspired Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.

See how cars are made

See how cars are made: BMW, Volkswagen, Porsche and Mercedes factories offer tours.

Boat in Bavaria

Discover romantic lakes with dark waters, forest-covered mountains, baroque chapels and fairy-tale hamlets.
